Elmer visits Quay Place to celebrate sculpture sponsorship
Suffolk Mind’s Heritage and Wellbeing Centre, Quay Place in Ipswich, is welcoming Elmer the Patchwork Elephant at an activity day to celebrate the centre’s sponsorship of a sculpture for Elmer’s Big Parade Suffolk.
Elmer will be joining in all the fun at an Easter-themed family day on Saturday 13th April. People can take part in an Easter Trail to win a prize, make Easter cards, create cute Easter chicks, and much more. There’s also a chance to meet the artist who’s designed the Quay Place sculpture, which is named ‘Together We’re Stronger’.
Artist, Charmaine Mckissock, said: “Elephants bring smiles to many people’s faces, as they represent gentle strength, resourcefulness and mutual support – values that we can’t do without in challenging times. The Elmer story also develops the theme of ‘it’s fine to be different’.
“Following on from this idea, I chose for my Elmer the theme of ‘Together We’re Stronger’, which supports our emotional need to be connected to others. This is why Suffolk Mind and Quay Place selected my design, alongside its sunshine colours and high emotional impact. Moreover, the Elmer campaign engages local communities and individuals, who may not think that art and creativity are for them.”
Elmer’s Big Parade Suffolk follows on from the success of the Pigs Gone Wild trail in 2016. It begins on 15th June 2019 and runs through to 7th September. The Quay Place elephant is one of 55 that will be scattered around Ipswich. Each sculpture is based on the much loved children’s character, Elmer the Patchwork Elephant.
Rebecca Herod, Deputy Manager at Quay Place said: “We’re very exited to be part of Elmer’s Big Parade Suffolk this summer. Our Easter activity day is just the beginning of lots of things happening to celebrate our involvement. We will be hosting a number of activities throughout the summer for the whole family to join in when they come and see our beautiful elephant from June.”
We’ve released a sneak peak of our elephant for you to enjoy…to see the rest of the beautiful design, head to Quay Place from June 15th.
